ABU DHABI // An 18-year-old Kuwaiti national has died in Sharjah after allegedly being attacked by two compatriots.
Police are investigating after the victim, named by Kuwaiti website Arab Times as Mubarak Mishal Mubarak, a first-year student at the University of Sharjah, fainted on campus yesterday.
His fellow students called for an ambulance but the teenager died of his injuries at hospital.
Police have said that two of the victims' friends, also Kuwaitis aged 18 and 19, are accused of "severely beating" him, leaving bruises and fractures to various parts of his body.
Both have been arrested and are being questioned by police, the Arabic-language newspaper Al Ittihad reported.
The student's body has been transferred to the police forensic laboratory to determine the cause of death and whether he suffered internal haemorrhaging. The investigation will help prosecutors decide whether there was criminal intent behind the assault.
An official from Kuwait's Foreign Ministry said it had been in contact with authorities in the UAE after a Kuwaiti citizen had been a "victim" of a "regrettable incident".
The ministry was in touch with the UAE Consulate General and its Culture Office soon after it was informed of the incident to find out details and follow up investigations.
