ABU DHABI // Sheikh Khalifa, the President, has invited the Egyptian president, Mohammed Morsi, to visit the UAE.

The invitation was delivered by the Foreign Minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, while he was on an official visit to Cairo yesterday.

During the meeting, the two discussed ways to boost "the distinguished bilateral ties" in various fields, with emphasis on establishing joint ventures and increasing UAE investment in Egypt, according to the state news agency Wam.

Also attending the meeting was the Egyptian foreign minister, Mohammed Kamil Amro, and the UAE's Ambassador to Egypt, Mohammed bin Nakhira Al Dhaheri.

President Morsi was voted into office earlier this year with 51.7 per cent of the vote during a runoff against former Prime Minister Hosni Mubarak.

He is the first civilian in the history of Egypt to hold the office of president.

He recently returned from his first major foreign tour during which he gave an emphatic speech at the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Tehran, where he spoke against the Syrian government and endorsed the Syrian opposition.
