ABU DHABI // The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has named Juma Al Majid, chairman of the Dubai Economic Council and founder of Juma Al Majid Group, the title of “UNHCR Humanitarian Champion”, in recognition of his humanitarian efforts and charitable activities over five decades.
Mr Al Majid is the founder and chairman of the Juma Al Majid Group of companies. The group operates in shipping, construction, food-imports, general trading, travel and other industries across more than 40 companies around the world.
According to state news agency Wam, the director of UNHCR’s Bureau for the Middle East and North Africa and refugee coordinator for the Syria and Iraq, Amin Awad, presented Mr Al Majid with the award.
Mr Al Majid’s recognition comes as the MENA region witnesses an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, particularly in light of the situations in Syria, Iraq and Yemen which have displaced millions of people.
“We look forward to our future engagement and collaboration with Juma Al Majid and his charities to provide assistance to the greatest number of persons of concern to UNHCR,” Director of UNHCR’s Bureau for the Middle East and North Africa said.
