Jail for expatriate who called Etisalat worker in Dubai “useless”

Canadian expat who told Etisalat employee that he was 'useless' is sentenced to one month in jail for slander.

DUBAI // An expatriate who told an Etisalat worker he was “useless” has been jailed for a month for slander.

Canadian M S was visiting the Etisalat store in Mirdif City Centre mall to ask about his monthly invoices but took exception to the way he was treated and told worker M G, 28, from Egypt, that he was “useless”.

The pair traded insults and the worker walked out from behind the counter and approached the customer.

The Canadian, who was visiting the store with his family, swore at him.

Two other workers intervened and the Canadian left. As he did so, the worker said: “Thank you, Allah.”

Prosecutors said the incident happened on May 12 last year.

The Canadian admitted slander at the Misdemeanours Court, agreeing that he had told the worker he was “useless” and had sworn at him.
