The director-general of the International Renewable Energy Agency, Adnan Amin, has been honoured with the Order of Zayed (first class).

Mr Amin is leaving the UAE after serving two terms and was given the award in recognition of his efforts in renewable energy.

Irena, which works to promote the adoption of sustainable energy, was established in 2009 and is based in Abu Dhabi.

More than 170 countries have signed up to Irena and are working together on ways to boost green energy.

Mr Amin is from Kenya and has spent the best part of two decades at the heart of the renewable industry.

The 60-year-old was presented with the honour by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, on Tuesday.

In an interview with The National to mark his departure, Mr Amin suggested renewables could generate 100 per cent of the UAE’s power needs within 50 years if the will and investment is there.
