SHARJAH // More than 50 kilograms of illegal paan chewing tobacco has been confiscated from a supermarket in Al Dhaid.

Municipality inspectors also found 900kg of raw materials to make the paan, a combination of tobacco and betel leaf, in the home of a supermarket worker.

Officials said the worker was secretly selling the tobacco in the shop, while he used his home in Fujairah to store the banned substances.

Salim Al Tunaij, head of operations at Al Dhaid Municipality, said there were many health risks associated with the use of paan.

“It is produced by mixing chemicals and natural materials together and it is used mainly by people of Asian descent,” he said.
