An Indian man who posted an insulting drawing of the Prophet Mohammed on his Facebook page was sentenced to three months in jail by the Dubai Court of First Instance
An Indian man, who posted an insulting drawing of the Prophet Mohammed on his Facebook page, was sentenced to three months in jail by the Dubai Court of First Instance on Thursday.
The 34-year-old man, found guilty of insulting Islam and disrespecting religion, was also fined Dh5,000.
The defendant's colleague, an Indian sales representative, saw the post and reported the incident to the Bur Dubai police station.
It was not clear in court documents when the complaint was filed, but the incident occurred on September 30 this year.
A 34-year-old police officer who arrested the defendant said his phone was confiscated.
The defendant told prosecutors that he shared the drawing without being aware that is insulting to Islam or the Prophet.
The man will be deported after serving his term.
