Hundreds of Ramadan beggars arrested in Sharjah
14 people with amputated hands were hired by a gang, Sharjah Police say
Hundreds have been arrested for begging before the start of Ramadan, Sharjah Police said.
Col Ibrahim Al Ajil, director of criminal investigation department at Sharjah Police, said 470 people have been arrested and referred to the public prosecution.
“Among those arrested for begging, 14 people with amputated hands who were hired by a gang to beg and ask residents for money on the emirate’s streets,” said Col Ajil.
“Those who were arrested entered the country on a visit visa or illegally.”
The public has been warned against empathising with the beggars.
There are several charitable organisations that offer help to those in need.
