Hundreds of drug smugglers caught out in Dubai
More than 500 drug raids took place in first half of the year
Tougher inspections have led to more than 500 drug busts in ports during the first six months of the year, Dubai Customs said.
A total of 540 drug seizures were carried out in city ports from the start of the year until June 22, with 290 at land ports, 216 in passengers’ operations spots and another seven in Jabel Ali Port, according to a report released by Dubai Customs.
Pictures of drug busts shared by Dubai Customs demonstrate that criminals are getting more creative in a bid to evade justice, including concealing drugs in mattresses and stashing them in construction site materials.
To ensure they stay a step ahead, customs staff have been equipped with and trained on the latest technology to beat the smugglers.
Ahmed Mahboob Musabih, director of Dubai Customs, said: “We provide our inspection officers with hands-on training and the latest devices and technologies which enable them to prevent illicit trafficking of all types of drugs.
“Dubai Customs uses advanced systems supported by the Smart Risk Engine, which contributes in finalising customs procedures with any human intervention,” he said.
