Hundreds of buildings demolished by Abu Dhabi Municipality

Abu Dhabi Municipality has demolished 200 abandoned buildings since 2011.
The buildings included villas, commercial buildings and government offices that undermined the beauty of the city or presented safety hazards, the Municipality said.
Of the 200 buildings, 55 were demolished by their owners while the rest were handled by the municipality, according to Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National.
In all, 81 residential villas, 90 commercial buildings and 29 government buildings have been torn down.
Before proceeding with any demolition, the municipality inventories the abandoned or disfigured buildings, then commissions a consultant to prepare a condition report before notifying the owner of the need to either carry out maintenance works or demolish the structure.
