Huge rise in Abu Dhabi weddings on 12/12/12

Couples in the capital who made a dash to be wed on December 12 led to a 900 per cent rise in marriage registrations.

ABU DHABI //Couples in the capital who made a dash to be wed on December 12 led to a 900 per cent rise in marriage registrations.

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department says 136 marriage certificates were issued on the "lucky" date of 12/12/12. On an average day, the department issues about 14 marriage certificates.

Among those who wed were 44 Emirati couples, 21 expatriate couples and 13 mixed couples (Emiratis marrying expatriates).

Only four marriage certificates were issued in Al Gharbia.

One was for a couple of expatriates and the other three for Emirati men marrying expatriate women.

The remaining 54 certificates were issued outside the office for 35 Emirati couples, 11 expatriate couples, five couples of Emirati grooms and expatriate brides, and three couples of Emirati brides and expatriate grooms.

Dubai Courts also recorded a big rise in weddings on the day.

"There was a huge crowd in the hall and marriage-related transactions rose by 500 per cent compared with three days prior," said Abdul Rahim Al Hashimi, head of the personal status section in Dubai Courts.

"Applicants flocked to court even before operating hours to head off a long wait, and four marriage notaries were working the morning shift to contain this predictably large number of marriage applicants."
