How to plan for and have a child by using IVF
It's not only couples who are unable to conceive a child naturally who opt for In Vitro Fertilisation.
IVF gives couples many options, including deciding the sex of a baby.
"To do this, when the embryos are around eight cells we do a small opening and take one cell from each and take them to the lab," a clinical embryologist explained. "It is useful to know if the baby is normal or abnormal, or boy or girl."
Once the results are known, doctors can tell which embryos are boys and which are girls, and thus will use those the couple chooses.
Some couples ask for twins or triplets, in which case more than one embryo is transferred to increase the chances.
"So if patients asked for twins we transfer three – two might stick, or sometimes even none."
Before IVF was available, a woman needed to take hormone injections for two weeks so the doctor could collect as many eggs as possible.
Then she would need another type of injection to make the egg mature.
IVF costs on average Dh28,000, rising to Dh42,000 if the couple wishes to have a sex test.
