DUBAI // Police have arrested a man in connection with a hit-and-run accident at the Burjuman Centre car park last week.

A woman and her child were seriously injured in the accident at 7.20pm on July 12, according to the Deputy Chief Traffic Prosecutor, Mohammed Al Nuaimi.

"The driver, a 29-year-old Iraqi man, hit the woman and her child after he drove recklessly and ignored the safety regulations in the shopping centre's parking lot, causing the child serious injuries," he said. "After committing the felony, the driver fled the scene. His car was recovered parked outside the mall."

The man was arrested on Sunday after Dubai Police Criminal Investigation Department officers located him at his home.

He confessed to the crime, according to traffic prosecutor Ammar Al Dhanhani, who added: "In his testimony he claimed that he fled the scene because he was confused and scared."

The man has been remanded in custody for seven days. Prosecutors have requested Al Refaa police station provide an updated report on the child's physical condition.
