AJMAN // A police officer who singlehandedly doused a fire which was in danger of spreading to a line of lorries received a citation yesterday from Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid, the Ruler of Ajman. Khalid Mohammed Mubarak al Baloushi acted quickly to fight the fire after he spotted flames leaping from a trailer among a line of lorries at the side of the road. Spotting a tanker carrying drinking water, Mr Baloushi ran up to the tanker, got hold of its hose and directed it to the burning trailer using to combat the fire, which was brought under control within half an hour.
Civil defence officers then arrived at the site and took control. Mr Baloushi was honoured for his courage, his presence of mind and fast response to the fire, which happened earlier this year. Brigadier Ali Abdullah Alwan, director general of Ajman Police, said the gesture from Sheikh Humaid would inspire others. mchung@thenational.ae
