With festivities set to begin today for the opening ceremony of the Qasr Al Hosn festival, five major roads and internal streets will be partly closed from 2pm to 7pm .
They are Airport Road, Al Falah Street, Hamdan Street, Electra Street and Khalid bin Al Waleed Street.
In addition, some schools in the vicinity have said they will close early.
Mohammed Salem Al Dhahiri, executive director of the school operations sector at Abu Dhabi Education Council, said that public schools within the road closure area would be closing early so pupils can get home.
A spokeswoman for private school Gems American Academy confirmed they would be closing at lunchtime as they anticipate heavy traffic amid road closures.
"The bell normally rings at 2.55pm but we will closing at 12.05pm instead," she said.
Airport Road will be closed from Hamdan Street to Al Falah Street, while Electra and Hamdan streets will be closed between Airport Road and Khalid bin Al Waleed Street.
Mashtal Street, an internal street located in Khalidiya between Airport Road and King Khalid bin Abdul Aziz Street, will also be closed.
Buses operating along these roads, on routes 6 to 9, 32, 34, 44 and 54, will be diverted.
There will be a free "park and ride" service from Mashtal Al Manhal in Khalidiya, where there are more than 500 parking spaces.
The service will run today from 7pm to 1am, and will continue throughout the festival celebrating the fort's 250th anniversary from 2pm to 1am on weekends, and 2pm to midnight on weekdays.
