Helicopter crashes after hitting zipline on Jebel Jais, killing all of its crew

Latest: Identities of UAE helicopter crash crew released

A rescue helicopter has crashed into mountains in Ras Al Khaimah after striking a zipline, killing all of its crew.

Video footage has emerged of the smash at Jebel Jais, which took place on Saturday evening.

It shows the helicopter going into a tailspin after striking a cable and bursting into flames after crashing into mountains.

The UAE's Supreme Council for National Security and the National Search and Rescue Centre both confirmed on social media that four people were aboard the helicopter at the time of the accident.

The UAE's civil aviation authority reported that the Agusta 139 craft was on a rescue mission in Jebel Jais when it crashed at 5.50pm.

Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, The Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, has ordered an investigation, WAM reported.

He ordered a comprehensive investigation into the safety and security measures undertaken at the site.

Haitham Mattar, Chief Executive Officer, Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, said: “We learned of the helicopter accident on Jebel Jais mountain and our heartfelt condolences go to the families of the pilot and crew. We can assure everyone that there were no injuries to any of the public on Jebel Jais, our team or the facilities on the mountain.

“We await further details pending the outcome of the investigation ordered by His Highness the Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.”
