DUBAI // Heavy rains and thunderstorms battered parts of the UAE on Friday, with forecasters warning that the bad weather will continue through to Sunday night.

People have been urged to take extra care while driving and to avoid going into the sea, as the Arabian Gulf and Oman Sea are forecast to be rough.

There was a large amount of dust in the air daytime on Friday before heavy rains fell on Abu Dhabi island and thunder, lightening and rain were felt in parts of Dubai in the evening.

Sharjah was also badly hit by rain, which caused flooding in some areas.

The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) said on Thursday that the weather will remain unstable for the next few days.

Forecasters said there are chances of scattered rainfall in parts of the country and it will be party cloudy with some dust, due to moderate to fast winds.

The centre added that there will be a decrease in temperature in some areas, with rain particularly in the eastern and northern regions.

However, the bad weather is unlikely to deter the 2,400 athletes from 68 countries taking part in the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon on the Corniche on Saturday. The event is one of the world’s 20 largest triathlons.
