The World Health Organisation said the UAE’s commitment to fighting diseases was proven by its efforts in tackling the Mers virus.
In June last year, WHO assistant director general Dr Keiji Fukuda said: “Significant efforts to improve infection control measures are being undertaken in the Middle East, especially in affected countries. We believe this is a major reason the number of cases has decreased.”
Dr Fukuda highlighted the work of UAE health authorities who invited WHO experts to assess the risk Mers posed. He said the authorities were open, shared information and introduced prevention and control measures.
Improved infection control measures in the region’s hospitals, including those in the UAE, had helped reduce the threat of Mers, he said.
The Middle East had taken “significant efforts to improve infection control measures”, especially in affected countries, Dr Fukuda had said at the time.
“We believe this is a major reason the number of cases has decreased.”
