DUBAI // The country’s largest autism centre has been expanded to provide places for 20 more children with the disorder.

The Dubai Autism Centre underwent a major renovation this year after an urgent demand for more places, said Hayula Mourad, head of communications at the centre.

The premises in Al Hudaiba was remodelled to include three more classrooms and five therapy rooms to cater for extra pupils from its intervention programmes.

“We take autism personally and try to provide help, support and services to as many families as is possible under the restrictions of the building,” said Ms Mourad.

“There are many organisations and individuals who realise the importance of tackling this growing disorder and are willing to lend a hand and support the centre’s efforts.”

Children there are given a wide range of care including behavioural, speech and occupational therapy.

This year, teachers have been placing more emphasis on helping pupils to gain access to the general schools curriculum.

The centre, which was founded in 2001, is also planning an awareness drive.

Experts will be visiting schools, universities and public and private companies to talk about autism, a developmental disorder usually found in the first three years of life and characterised by impaired social interaction and communication.

The centre will also be holding a training programme to help families care for children with autism.
