ABU DHABI // Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak joined the likes of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, and Queen Elizabeth II last night when she was awarded an honorary fellowship by Britain's Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. The accolade, the college's highest, is presented once every four or five years to an advocate for women's and children's health. The college hosted the Eighth International Scientific Meeting of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Abu Dhabi this week, an event held under the patronage of Sheikha Fatima.

"We awarded the honorary fellowship to Sheikha Fatima to respect her contributions to women's and children's health in the UAE and the region," said Professor Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran, the president of the London-based charity, which has 12,000 fellows and members worldwide. Sheikha Fatima, the chairwoman of the General Women's Union and of the Family Development Foundation, was presented with an official scroll at her palace.

Earlier this week, she was given a plaque by Unicef in recognition of her commitment to children's issues. munderwood@thenational.ae
