Restaurant suppliers sold expired produce

Five employees of a company that provides five-star hotels and popular restaurants in Dubai with frozen, fresh and dry foodstuff were jailed for four months yesterday for knowingly selling expired produce.

DUBAI // Five employees of a company that provides five-star hotels and popular restaurants in Dubai with frozen, fresh and dry foodstuff were jailed for four months yesterday for knowingly selling expired produce.

The men - an Indian, TL, 42, a partner in the company; his compatriots AB, 35, an assistant warehouse supervisor; JV, 39, a security guard; RT, 39, a labourer; and a Bangladeshi, MP, 24, also a labourer - were convicted of fraud involving foodstuff intended for human consumption, forging labels and possessing food unfit for human consumption by the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours.

TL was also fined Dh20,000 for operating outside a free zone area without a licence and Dh1,000 for failing to report a deportee.

Dubai Municipality food inspectors investigating the company's warehouse in Jebel Ali found that the men had replaced labels and repackaged food that had expired and contained bacteria. The inspectors referred the case to Jebel Ali police.

The court ordered the company to shutdown for one month and confiscated the expired food.
