ABU DHABI //The municipality is to introduce new regulations monitoring the cleanliness of public toilets by September.

The initiative by the city authorities will ensure that the highest standards in hygiene and appearance are maintained.

"Sometimes you go into a bathroom and there is no tissue or no soap or no dryer for your hands," said Khaleefa Al Romaithi, the director of public health at the municipality.

"We are going to make big changes."

The law will require that a member of staff in each establishment is assigned to monitor the toilets. The regulations will apply to all public facilities, including those at malls, in hotels and cinemas and at bus stations.

Penalties, including fines and referrals to the court, will be levied against offenders.
