A new cancer research centre is due to open in Sharjah, the emirate’s ruler Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi has announced.

The facility, one of a number established around the world by the Sheikh’s wife, Sheikha Jawaher Al Qasimi, is expected to be completed in March.

Sheikh Al Qasimi made the announcement on Wednesday during the launch of the 10th edition of the Pink Caravan Ride - a breast cancer awareness campaign.

This year, the initiative will see a group of 350 doctors and 100 volunteers travel to all seven emirates to highlight the importance of early screening for breast cancer detection.

“On behalf of Sharjah, Sheikha Jawaher has led tremendous efforts to establish several centres dedicated to cancer awareness, treatment and research around the world,” said Sheikh Al Qasimi.

“Some are already operational and others will be launched soon. In mid-March, the UAE will witness the launch of the Sharjah Cancer Research Centre for Cancer.

“Also, a new building for the National Cancer Institute at Cairo University will be inaugurated.”

Under the slogan “Plenty is not enough”, the UAE caravan ride aims to deliver more than 10,000 free screenings across the country.

“Society doesn’t develop and grow without combined efforts,” said Sheikh Al Qasimi.

“We want to pass on to our children the values of volunteerism and community service.”

Sheikha Jawaher, founder and patron of Friends of Cancer Patients, said cancer awareness was on the increase.

She said many people who had previously ignored what was considered a “taboo topic” were now getting tested.

“PCR's work will not end until cancer is eradicated,” she said.
