ABU DHABI // The latest research into the prevention and treatment of diabetes and Alzheimer's disease will be discussed at the next Muntada event.
Dr Miia Kivipelto, professor of clinical geriatric epidemiology at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, and Dr Jaakko Tuomilehto, professor of public health at the University of Helsinki, in Finland, will talk about new-found links between the illnesses.
The Muntada event is free, open to all and will take place on September 15 from 7pm to 9pm at Manaraat Al Saadiyat.
Dr Kivipelto is a professor of clinical geriatric epidemiology at Karolinska.
She has received many awards for her work, including the Academy of Finland Award for Social Impact and the Junior Chamber International Award as Outstanding Young Person, in Finland and Internationally.
Dr Tuomilehto, professor of public health at the University of Helsinki has published more than 800 peer-reviewed original articles and 200 editorials, reviews and book chapters.
He is also affiliated with the Diabetes and Genetic Epidemiology Unit of the National Public Health Institute in Helsinki, and holds a position as a professor at the Danube-University Krems, Austria.
Dr Tuomilehto is the chair of the Finnish Epidemiological Society and the Neuroepidemiology Science Panel of the European Federation of Neurological Sciences.
Muntada events launched in April 2011 as a way to expose the nation to thought-provoking topics.
The series has already hosted 22 speakers on eight subjects.
Up to 250 people usually attend the talks, which are followed by a 20-minute question-and-answer session.
The discussions are dubbed into Arabic and/or English and posted online to reach a wider audience.
