The Ministry of Education has launched a project to supply government schools in the northern emirates with daily healthy meals during the next academic year.
The Ministry set 8 conditions that companies must meet to be part of the project, plus a 15-item list of obligations.
In the regulations, the ministry said meals must cost between Dh3 and Dh5, in addition to sandwiches for Dh1, with hot meals for high school students between Dh3 to Dh10.
The Ministry aims to protect students from health risks associated with obesity, reported Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National.
There will be strict rules to monitor food and beverage suppliers as well as school canteens. Suppliers are required to provide fridges for water, juices, milk and light snacks in school yards at a rate of one for every 150 students.
