An international centre for the accreditation of Halal food is to open in Dubai.

The centre, which will test food and other products for chemical or artificial additives that fail to comply with Islamic law, aims to become the first international reference in the global food industry, said Hussein Nasser Lootah, the municipality’s director general.

It will be staffed by workers from the municipality’s food control department.

Salem bin Mesmar, the municipality’s assistant director general of health, safety and environment monitoring, said a centre for accreditation and certification had already been established for halal food operations locally.

Dubai’s facilities and infrastructure would help it to establish this first international centre in halal food accreditation, he said.
