ABU DHABI // A 59-year-old resident of Abu Dhabi, who suffers from diabetes and final-stage renal failure, was diagnosed with Mers coronavirus, the Health Authority - Abu Dhabi confirmed.
The man, currently on dialysis, complained of respiratory symptoms and was admitted to hospital, where he was diagnosed with the illness, the state news agency, Wam, reported.
Last month, the World Health Organisation (WHO) reported two new cases of the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus in the UAE.
The Ministry of Health said that globally, detected cases continue to be very low compared to other types of flu-like illness. It is monitoring the situation.
The authority said it is coordinating with the Ministry of Health and other authorities and has taken all necessary measures as per international standards and recommendations from the WHO.
Up to April 1, the WHO reported there were 207 laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with Mers worldwide, including 87 deaths.
The WHO is urging all of its member nations to remain vigilant and report any new cases to it as soon as possible. Cases of Mers, which can cause coughing, fever, pneumonia and kidney failure, have been confirmed in the Middle East, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Tunisia.
