DUBAI // The US embassy in Abu Dhabi and consulate in Dubai will continue to operate on a limited basis, despite the shutdown of the American government over a congressional stand-off.

US embassy spokesman Jeffrey Ladenson said emergency assistance and visa services would be available.

“Services to American citizens seeking assistance from the US embassy and US consulate, as well as Emirati citizens and UAE residents who wish to obtain a visa to the US, will not be impacted at the present time,” Mr Ladenson said.

As the US Congress has not authorised enough funds for government operations, the government stops providing all but essential services.

The shutdown began on Tuesday. The main issue is a congressional impasse over the introduction of president Barack Obama's health reforms, signed into law in 2010.

“Some US departments and agencies working under the US mission to the UAE will be affected by the government shutdown,” Mr Ladenson said.

“For specific information on the impact of these operations, I refer you to the appropriate department or agency in Washington.”
