ABU DHABI // The first model school in South Waziristan has been finished at a cost of US$500,000 (Dh1.83 million), the UAE Project to Assist Pakistan has announced.

The school covers 774 square metres and has a lecture hall, five classrooms, a library, computer, information technology and science laboratories, modern sports facilities and offices for teachers and administrators.

About 150 students will be taught in the two-storey school in Wana.

South Waziristan was chosen because of the lack of education and other basic infrastructure, such as roads and transport, the project said.

The distribution of school bags and stationery was a positive step that would help to ease the financial burden of low-income families and orphans.

Establishing the school has given new life to those living in remote areas and would ensure a promising future for the young and their families, the management said.

This is part of the implementation of instructions for the region sent out by the President, Sheikh Khalifa, the state news agency Wam reported.

Sheikh Khalifa’s other initiatives in the area include projects in health, education, transport and water.

These initiatives, particularly the model schools, would help the country to build an educated and professionally qualified generation capable of handling future challenges, the project said.

It praised Sheikh Khalifa for supporting the learning process and building modern schools in South Waziristan as the area has suffered from years of underdevelopment.
