SHARJAH // The Ministry of Interior has adopted a plan to promote human rights in the country.

It was drawn up at the third meeting of the Human Rights Committee of the Secretariat of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.

The meeting at the Sharjah Cultural Palace was overseen by Brig Gen Ahmed Mohammed Nakhira, the ministry’s director of its human rights department.

He said the issue of human rights was one of the most pressing in the UAE, and that the ministry had been working on implementing various international, regional and local initiatives to put human-rights principles into practice.

Brig Gen Nakhira said safeguarding the rights, freedom and dignity of all members of society was of high importance to the ministry.

This is in keeping with the UAE’s adherence to the constitution and national laws that are derived from the values and teachings of Islam.

The police directorates and departments were also committed to the regulations that ensure human rights, said Brig Gen Nakhira.

The committee discussed its plan and methodology, and said that its reports on human rights would be updated on a half-yearly basis.

The working group will work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Human Rights Commission at the Federal National Council and the Ministry of Labour to coordinate their work.
