Polls have opened across the UAE to elect half the members of the country’s Federal National Council.
Thirty-nine polling stations across the UAE will accommodate the 330,000 Emiratis eligible to vote in this year’s election.
Stations opened at 8am and will close at 8pm, with results of the electronic vote expected soon after they close.
A 22 year old Emirati student was the first to cast a vote in Abu Dhabi who said he was simply doing his national duty.
"The process was simple," said Mohammed Al Maakum.
Mohammed Al Mazrouei, 45, a camel owner, was casting his vote at Abu Dhabi's National Exhibition Centre.
"I just want the candidate to serve the country and be good to the people," he said.

In Ras Al Khaimah, voter Ayesha Al Shahhi, 48, said it was a glorious day for the country.
"We should all participate and vote for the right person. I'm here to support women in general."
Early voting at several stations has been taking place during the week.
Currently, 479 Emiratis are competing for 20 FNC seats. The remaining 20 members are appointed by the Rulers.
