Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, visited the Al Ghurair family home in Al Khawaneej on Tuesday to offer condolences after the death of Saif Al Ghurair.

He was joined by Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, and Khalifa Saeed Sulaiman, the Director General of  the Protocol and Hospitality Department in Dubai.

Al Ghurair, who died aged 95, was one of Dubai's most prominent businessmen, having founded the Al Ghurair Group in 1960. Its collection of interests across manufacturing, retail and real estate was central to the  ascent of Dubai as a world centre of trade.

In 1981, he opened the city's first shopping mall — the Al Ghurair Centre — which is still going strong today.

Sheikh Mohammed tweeted: "The UAE called Saif bin Ahmed Al Ghurair the son of Dubai and one of its loyal men. He was an economist and a visionary, who gave his country thought and effort. May God have mercy on the deceased."
