Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid meets Rahul Gandhi in Dubai

The President of the Indian National Congress praised the tolerance model adopted by the UAE

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, received Rahul Gandhi, the President of the Indian National Congress, in Dubai on Friday.

The meeting, which was attended by Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, shed light on the historical relations between the two countries and their solid bonds of friendship.

They underlined the importance of maintaining the privileged relations between the two countries on the basis of tolerance, mutual understanding and fostering interfaith dialogue.

Mr Gandhi commended the great developmental strides made by the UAE and the impressive transformational drive adopted by the country at all fronts. He also praised the tolerance model adopted by the country, which, he said, is an example to be emulated by all world nations.

The meeting was also attended by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group; Mohammad bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and The Future; Dr Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs; and Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemy, Minister of State for International Cooperation.

Mr Gandhi was later greeted by a crowd of 24,000 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium where he described non-resident Indians all over the world as the country’s biggest strength.

He also spoke of his meeting with Sheikh Mohammed, saying he was struck by the Dubai Ruler’s humility.

“The number one emotion I experienced in His Highness was humility. Great nations are built with that type of humility,” Mr Gandhi said.

“A leader is he who has vision and listens and appreciates not only the people of his own country, but the voice of others who live here.”
