An island in Abu Dhabi is quickly becoming known as a must-visit leisure destination.

On Wednesday, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, toured the fast-developing Hudayriat Island.

During the visit he announced that a key waterfront project there will be formally opened within the next 30 days, Abu Dhabi Media Office reported.

It features a seafront path, camping spots, jogging and cycling routes and restaurants.

Sheikh Mohamed also directed that food truck owners there be exempt from rent for the next six months.

"We visited [the] Al Hudayriat project, an important addition to Abu Dhabi's entertainment and tourism sector," said Sheikh Mohamed.

"We aim to develop inclusive and unique projects, which encourage a healthier lifestyle for the whole community."

Central to the development is Marsana, a waterfront area, which features cafes, a skating rink, a children's water park, cycle park and what's known as Circuit X, an area dedicated to thrill-seekers. Sheikh Mohamed ordered a rent exemption for shop owners in Marsana as well. He was also shown around 10 leisure facilities as part of project including the "stars gate" which provides camping spots; "321 sports village', which encompasses sports areas; and "Hudayriat heritage walk", which provides visitors with a history of the island and of the UAE's pearl diving tradition.

Pictures showed Sheikh Mohamed touring the island, inspecting developments and even snapping a photograph on his phone. Plans were first announced for the island in 2009 and work has increased over the years.

Hudayriat, just opposite Bateen Beach and accessed across a striking suspension bridge, is already home to a popular beach.
