Sharjah Ruler granted honorary doctorate from University of Coimbra in Portugal - in pictures

The university described him as “the man who brings cultures together”

Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah, has been granted an honorary doctorate from the University of Coimbra in Portugal in recognition of his efforts for supporting culture, literature and history on local and international fronts.

It described him as “the man who brings cultures together” having established new frontiers to respect and tolerance.

Since its inception in 1290, the university has given this degree to 190 people, including António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, and Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission.

Held at the University of Coimbra headquarters, the ceremony was attended by Mousa Abdul Wahid Al Khaja, UAE Ambassador to Portugal; Paulo Portas, former Deputy Prime Minister of Portugal; João Gabriel Silva, Rector of University of Coimbra; José Pedro Pavia, Dean of the university of Coimbra and Dr Amr Abdel Hamid, Director of the Sharjah Research Academy (SRA).

Sheikh Sultan has published an array of literary, historical and theatrical works and has now been awarded 17 honorary certificates and doctorates from institutions around the world.
