ABU DHABI // A conference centred on peaceful coexistence in Muslim societies will draw intellectuals and scholars from around the world to the capital next week.
Under the patronage of Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Minister of Foreign Affairs, "Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies" will focus on values such as dignity, equality and freedom in an attempt to shed light on ways of dealing with differences in cultures.
Speakers will try to clarify misconceptions and discuss the importance of original Sharia objectives amid social and cultural change. Jihad, fatwas and the responsibility of Islamic preachers will also to be addressed.
The forum will show how Islam promotes world peace and peaceful communities, and the roles played by scholars and the media in promoting harmony.
The main goal is to overcome issues caused by ideological or political differences between states.
Speakers will include Sheikh Ahmed Al Tayeb, Grand Imam and president of Al Azhar, the seat of Sunni Muslim learning, and Dr Ahmed Abdulaziz Al Haddad, Grand Mufti of Dubai and director of Dubai Fatwa Administration.
Sheikh Hamza Yusuf, president and co-founder of Zaytuna College in California, is also due to attend.
