The Ruler of Sharjah is challenging the nation's youth to unlock their potential - after announcing a new award celebrating the achievements of the next generation.

Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, launched "The Sheikh Sultan Award for Celebrating the Spirit of Youth" at a ceremony held at Al Badee Palace on Thursday.

Entry is open to young people aged between 13 and 18, from all nationalities residing in the UAE, with future installments set to welcome applicants from across the globe.

The award focuses on academic knowledge, talent and skill acquired through mental, physical and moral learning.

It is split up into areas rewarding achievements in adventure, volunteering and talent.

For the adventure category, participants must demonstrate an ability to adapt to life at a camp, facing challenges thrown at them by nature.

In the volunteering section, they must give their time to a cause that benefits the community.

In the skill section, hopefuls must choose a skill they wish to develop from a list on the award's website and document heir development in a video lasting between five to ten minutes.

Depending on their levels of success, young people can earn gold, silver and bronze awards.

They will be presented with their accolades at award ceremonies by the Ruler of Sharjah.

A pilot scheme held ahead of its official launch involved 66 participants from Sajaya Young Ladies of Sharjah and Sharjah Youth, 47 of whom were honoured with medals and certificates.

Sheikh Suktan said the award will encourage young people to "achieve excellence".

"The youth are the future of any nation, so it is incumbent on all of us, at all levels, whatever our positions are, to plan and unite efforts, so that our sons and daughters, from birth, at homes, schools, cultural, art and sports centres, get the appropriate and safe environment, which allows all to develop their physical and mental integrity, to reveal and polish their talents and to excel in their fields," Sheikh Sultan said.

"We celebrate and support excellence across all fields, without any exceptions, opening new doors for personal development where you can enjoy practicing and learning from as much as you can, to invest as much of your efforts as possible.”
