More than 140,000 cameras have been installed on buildings across Ras Al Khaimah to boost security in the city.

The CCTV cameras are part of the Hemaya project, which means protection in Arabic.

As part of the project, external and internal CCTV cameras were installed in more than 16,000 establishments across RAK.

Hundred service providers were hired to install cameras in and around shops, hospitals, mosques, hotels, towers, residential and commercial buildings.

“The 141,839 external and internal surveillance cameras were installed in 16,392 establishments across Ras Al Khaimah as part of the integrated security system Hemaya,” said Maj Gen Ali Al Nuaimi.

“Using the surveillance system, police will be able to act fast and make arrests in case of a robbery or any crime,” he said.

According to authorities, police was able to solve 83 per cent of cases in 2018 with the help of these hi-tech surveillance systems. The number was 74 per cent in 2017.

“The General Resources Authority, in cooperation with the Licensing Department at RAK Police, are conducting periodic inspection campaigns on all establishments to ensure their compliance and implementation of Hemaya system,” said Jamal Al Tair, chairman of RAK General Resources Authority.

Mr Al Tair said the service providers constantly inspect and monitor the places where the cameras are installed.

This is to check the camera providers and owners obey the rules.

“The team also works on directing other facilities that have not implemented the system yet to expedite its implementation,” he said.

“Institutions, government departments and private [companies] in the emirate should join hands and implement Hemaya system,” he said.
