A quick-thinking police officer was praised for rescuing a man who threw himself into the sea following a traffic accident.

First Assistant Rashed Salem Al Shehhi, from Abu Dhabi traffic department, risked his own life by jumping into the sea to pull the man to safety.

Officers said the man was in shock after escaping from a car crash and was not aware of what he was doing.

The driver was taken to hospital where he remained unconscious for several days. Mr Al Shehhi was also treated for minor injuries but both men have recovered.

"A police officer can never neglect or abandon his main duty of saving human lives," Mr Al Shehhi said.

Police also praised the efforts of two other men who helped with the rescue.
