DUBAI // People who pluck flowers from public parks or other Dubai Municipality sites will be slapped with fines ranging from Dh500 to Dh1,000, a senior official announced.

“Some people have a habit to pluck beautiful flowers without thinking about the consequences,” said Mohammed Al Awadi, head of the horticulture section of the public parks and horticulture department.

The municipality has also learned that some groups cut flowers in bulk for sale to florists.

“They must understand that the civic body has been spending millions of dirhams to import and cultivate all these flowers,” he said.

Excuses such as ignorance about the rules regarding destruction of public property, the age or the gender of the offender will not be entertained.

The public can report violations by calling the municipality hotline 800900.
