More than 100 UAE residents facing financial hardship will be given free health insurance thanks to a new government plan.

Dubai Health Authority unveiled the Year of Zayed Insurance card – which will provide coverage worth up to Dh150,000 per person – to pay homage to the generosity of the country's Founding Father, it said.

It is the latest in a series of projects led by the health authority during the Year of Zayed, which marks 100 years since the birth of Sheikh Zayed in 2018.

The scheme, run with the help of private sector insurers, aims to ensure people are not priced out of receiving vital health care.

This new card was rolled out at a ceremony held at Al Etihad Museum.

Humaid Al Qutami, director general of the health authority, said the Year of Zayed helped the organisation to "reinforce the values" of Sheikh Zayed.

"Our Founding Father was known regionally and globally for his humanity, generosity and charity," Mr Al Qutami said. "The UAE is known globally for its philanthropic work and we will continue our humanitarian initiatives to the best of our ability.”

The DHA also led efforts to help scores of children with congenital heart problems receive free surgery during the Year of Zayed, supported a competition to back rising medical talents and contributed to a bid to build 100 wells to provide clean drinking water to needy people across the globe.

It also vowed to play its part in the UAE's coming Year of Tolerance.
