Fashion designers in the UAE will compete to create uniforms that weave in local elements on organic and recycled material for a 30,000 strong Expo 2020 team.

The uniforms will be worn by staff and volunteers every day of the six month world fair.

The designs should draw on the UAE’s heritage, reflect the Expo’s theme ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future,’ while being practical, weather appropriate, easily identifiable and modest, the expo team announced on Wednesday.

“The uniform will be one of the most visible elements of Expo 2020,” said Rita Penteado, vice president of human resources, workforce and volunteers at Expo 2020 Dubai.

“We are looking for a uniform that embodies the Emirati character and will represent the UAE on the world stage. It should also create a sense of pride and unity when worn by our volunteers and staff.”

Three finalists selected by end-September will receive Dh50,000 and be asked to create samples that include a jacket, hat, bag, tie, scarf, kandora and ghutra, abaya and shayla and an Expo 2020 accessory.
