A massive message of support was delivered from the world's tallest building in Dubai to millions of people battling rare diseases across the globe.

The Burj Khalifa lit up in stunning style on Saturday evening as the UAE joined more than 100 nations in marking Rare Disease Day.

Earlier on Saturday, more than 1,500 people attended a walk in honour of the event - held on the final day of February each year - at Kite Beach in Dubai.

Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak, Minister of Tolerance, joined families and well-wishers on the march to raise awareness of many who suffer from diseases which many not be widely acknowledged or understood.

More than 300 million people worldwide are affected by one of 6,000 rare diseases.

A rare disease is one that affects fewer than 1 in 2,000 people, the majority of whom are young children.
