SHARJAH // A girl, 9, has died after being hit by a car as she left school.

The Indian girl was run over in Al Azrah about 1.30pm yesterday, said Maj Khaled Al Kayi, the director of media at Sharjah Police.

"Police hurried to the scene after getting the news but found the girl had already died," Maj Al Kayi said. "Her body has been taken to Al Qassimi Hospital and her parents informed."

He said officers were questioning the driver, and appealed to motorists to slow down, especially near schools.

Meanwhile, a German woman, 60, is in a critical condition after being hit by a car in Umm Al Quwain yesterday morning.

The woman was exercising near Corniche Road about 5am when she was hit by a car, which then drove off. A police spokesman said officers were searching for the driver.

A UAQ Hospital administrator said her condition was critical but stable, and she was due to undergo brain surgery.
