SHARJAH // A four-year-old girl fell to her death from the window of her eighth-floor flat in Al Nahda on Monday night.
The Indian girl, named Amna, fell while looking out the window. She had been left alone in the room while her mother was cooking, police said.
The girl's parents have been taken into custody and the mother has been charged with negligence and carelessness.
Lt Col Ahmed bin Harmool, the director of Al Buhaira police, said the girl died instantly. The mother said the window had been closed and she did not know how Amna had opened it.
Police said the girl had climbed on to a table and was looking outside when she fell.
Maj Abdullah Salim, the director of CID at Al Buhaira police, said her body has been moved to a forensic laboratory.
Col Sultan Al Khayal, director of media and public relations at Sharjah police, warned about leaving tables and other pieces of furniture near windows.
He also advised parents to keep balcony doors locked and urged building owners to install locks on windows that would restrict how far they can open.
