Girl, 3, in coma after being found face-down in pool

Emirati girl is in is critical condition in hospital after being discovered in a swimming pool.

ABU DHABI //A three-year-old girl is in a coma in an Abu Dhabi hospital after being found face-down in a swimming pool.

The Emirati child, Shahd, was rushed to the emergency room of Al Rahba Hospital after the discovery on Friday afternoon.

A spokeswoman from Seha, the Abu Dhabi health services company, said Shahd remains in a coma and on a ventilator in the hospital's intensive care unit.

Seha said: "The patient appeared to be a drowning victim. On arrival, the patient had no heartbeat and no respiration. CPR was performed and heartbeat restored but the patient has not regained consciousness. She was admitted to the hospital and sent to ICU."

Shahd's doctor did not disclose any further information, to protect the family's confidentiality.

There have been a series of drownings involving young people in the past month.

On Friday afternoon, an 18-year-old drowned after he was hit by a wave while swimming off the Khor Fakkan corniche on the Gulf of Oman.

On April 23, two teenage brothers drowned in a pit full of rainwater in a mountainous area of Fujairah.

On April 14, Nandana, the eight-year-old daughter of the Indian playback singer KS Chitra, drowned in a swimming pool at a villa in Dubai.

According to the US-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than a fifth of drowning victims are children aged 14 and younger.

Last year a report by the World Health Organisation listed drowning as the third most common cause of accidental death in the world, behind falls and traffic accidents. An estimated 388,000 drowning deaths occur worldwide every year, accounting for 7 per cent of injury-related deaths.
