A three-year-old girl fell to her death from a 12th floor flat in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

Police and paramedics were called to the Khalidiya residential tower at 1.30pm.

The girl, of Arab origin, had been left unattended and fell from the window of the apartment where she lived with her parents after climbing furniture, police said.

Col Hamad Al Neyadi, deputy director of Abu Dhabi Police's criminal security department, said it was vital that children were not left at home unsupervised.

He said one of the main reasons children fall from apartment windows is because furniture is often placed beneath them, which children can climb.

In September, a three-year-old girl fell to her death from her family's flat in Fujairah.

The girl fell from the sixth floor of the building after climbing a chair positioned near an open balcony window.
