ABU DHABI // Two people were injured in a gas explosion which damaged 21 buildings and 45 cars in Mussafah yesterday.

The central gas tube feeding an eight-storey building in commercial Mussafah east 10 exploded at about 3.30am, shattering the windows of nearby buildings and cars. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.

The injured man and woman were transferred to Al Mafraq hospital after receiving first aid on site.

The fire spread across the mezzanine and first floors of the building and reached some shops, but was stopped before spreading further, said Col Mohammed Al Nuaimi, the acting head of Abu Dhabi Civil Defence.

Residents whose homes were destroyed were offered accommodation by the UAE Red Crescent Authority.

Col Al Nuaimi reminded the public to secure their buildings and check the central gas system every three months.
