Gargash reaffirms UAE commitment to Afghanistan

Dr Anwar Gargash, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to the security and stability of Afghanistan at the seventh Regional Economic Cooperation Conference on Afghanistan in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

''The UAE has extended assistance worth US$1.67 billion [Dh6.13 billion] to help Afghanistan recover from long years of disasters and catastrophes. The assistance covered 16 humanitarian developmental sectors including infrastructure, reconstruction and economic recovery,'' he said.

He added that the UAE is training imams in Afghanistan on the principles of moderate Islam, peace and tolerance.

''The UAE is looking forward to seeing a new era in Afghanistan that contributes to realisation of security and prosperity for its people and stability to the region,'' he said.

Dr Gargash met Turkmenistan's foreign minister Rashid Meredov at the conference, state news agency Wam reported. They discussed bilateral relations and regional developments.
