An armed gang who stole Dh265,000 in an ambush on a pair of cash transit security guards in Dubai have failed in a bid to have their sentences reduced.

Nine Nigerian man, brandishing axes, meat cleavers and knives, slashed the tyres of a transport vehicle before launching an attack on the two guards as they left an exchange centre carrying a box containing the large sum of cash.

The exchange centre's manager witnessed the robbery on July 22 last year and alerted police - but the raiders had already fled when officers arrived.

Police found an empty money box about 500 metres from the scene in Al Muhaisna.

The offenders, however, were caught on CCTV and eight of the gang were tracked down in Ajman, with the cash and their weapons seized. The ninth member of the group remains at large.

The men were convicted of armed robbery and sentenced to two years in prison each at Dubai Criminal Court, to be followed by deportation.

The sentences were upheld during a hearing at Dubai Court of Appeal.
